At a time when print media is declining, and many media houses have shut loss-making editions or cut corners to stay afloat, the Delhi-headquartered English daily, The Pioneer, launched its Kerala edition on 13 June 2026 – marking a bold and rather risky step to enter a highly literate state where newspapers still hold sway.
According to a report on dailypioneer.com, the edition was formally inaugurated at a function in Thiruvananthapuram by chief minister VD Satheesan, who emphasized the importance of responsible, people-centric media in strengthening democracy.
Kerala is still a print-heavy news media market dominated by Malayalam newspapers such as Malayala Manorama and Mathrubhumi. Other prominent names include Kerala Kaumudi, Madhyamam and the CPM mouthpiece, Deshabhimani.
The English newspaper market is primarily led by The Hindu and The New Indian Express. The Times of India made an unsuccessful bid to enter the Kerala market, which withstood the onslaught of the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown on the back of strong government support and a well-oiled distribution network.
Managing director and editor of The Pioneer’s Kerala edition, Bandi Sudhakar Goud, who presided over the event, described the launch as a major milestone and reaffirmed the newspaper’s focus on editorial independence and journalistic excellence, dailypioneer.com reported.
Bandi Sudhakar Goud, a Congress leader from Telangana, is also chairman and managing director of Amogh Publication Networks, The Pioneer’s launch partner in Kerala, news media reports stated.
Deputy speaker Shanimol Usman received the inaugural copy. J Gopikrishnan, a senior editor with The Pioneer, outlined the publication’s editorial vision, stressing accuracy, balance, and public-interest reporting.
State home minister Ramesh Chennithala, attending as guest of honor, welcomed the launch and praised The Pioneer’s legacy of impactful reporting. He expressed confidence that the publication would emerge as a strong voice in Kerala’s media landscape.
Prashant Tewari, chairman and managing director of The Pioneer Group, congratulated the team and expressed optimism about the success of the new edition.
