HP brings AI to Latex R530

Plan to embed AI capabilities across range of large-format printers

The Latex R530, seen here in roll-to-roll configuration, comes with tables that can be fitted on either side to enable printing to rigid boards.

HP has announced a new AI version of its entry-level large-format hybrid printer, the Latex R530, launched in May 2025. This is the first part of a wider plan to embed AI capabilities across its range of large-format printers in the belief that this will lead to better production efficiencies.

However, for this new R530 variant, most of the AI features come from the PrintOS Production Hub, which is a software solution for order management, job submission and remote print control. This would normally be sold separately, but the R530 AI includes two years of access.

HP has also added new AI capabilities to the PrintOS Production Hub. These include AI Order Intake, which uses natural-language AI to turn a customer email or file into an order. HP claims this can speed up the order creation time, but, of course, this largely depends on whatever system each print service provider was previously using, and the degree of information that the customers include within their emails.

This is complemented by another new feature, AI Upscale, which is designed to improve low-resolution files in one click. The Production Hub can also be used with printer hardware from other vendors, and HP says that both of these features – AI Order Intake and AI Upscale – can be used with any vendor’s hardware.

The R530 AI printer itself does gain a new AI version of the HP Internal Print Server, which includes Edge AI software. This has allowed a new Automatic Print Mode Selection feature where the on-board AI software chooses the optimal print settings, striking a balance between print quality and throughput, without any human decision-making.

If the software judges that a given file doesn’t require any work, then another feature, Direct Job Submission, sends work straight from the PrintOS Production Hub to the print queue. HP says it has also improved the server hardware for faster rendering and more storage. HP has quoted some of its early beta users – Campano Lab in Italy and Sign On Time in Ireland – as saying that the jobs are indeed sent more quickly to the printer.

Other than this, the basic specifications for the Latex R530 remain the same for the existing and the new AI variant. Thus, it’s a 1.6-m-wide roll-to-roll printer that comes with tables on either side as standard so that it can handle both roll-fed and rigid media, up to 5cm in thickness. The output remains the same, with HP quoting a top speed of up to 24 square meters an hour, though the standard speed of 15.5 square meters an hour is probably a more accurate guide. Nonetheless, for those print shops where the job queue formed a bottleneck, this new AI variant should deliver the files to the printer quicker.

Whether or not that’s enough to justify the extra cost of the Print OS Production Hub will depend on each individual print shop’s workflow. In my view, this new variant is mainly designed to persuade more entry-level customers to take on the HP PrintOS Production Hub rather than simply using a cheaper RIP. Again, print shops will have to decide if that is likely to remain good value for money after the two years’ access is up.

Daniel Martinez, SVP of HP Large Format Printing GBU and GSB Software & Solutions, commented, “Print service providers are under constant pressure to deliver more jobs, faster, while maintaining the quality their customers expect. With HP PrintOS Production Hub and the new HP Latex R530 AI Printer, we are bringing intelligence into the production workflow where it can make a meaningful difference — simplifying everyday decisions, connecting previously separate production stages and giving PSPs a platform that can continue to evolve with their business.”

The new HP Latex R530 AI Printer will be commercially available from December 2026, complete with two years of Plus Plan, which includes HP PrintOS Production Hub AI premium features and printer support. However, the AI Automatic Print Mode Selection will be delayed until early 2027 and should be supplied to customers through a firmware upgrade. You can find more details on hp.com.
