On 15 February, Tecnau concluded its annual global kick-off meeting under the theme ‘Ready for the Future’ and announced its Product Outlook 2023, focusing on supporting customer demands for innovative, reliable, and efficient solutions for production print. Tecnau is a multinational company offering products related to paper handling, monitoring, processing, and finishing for the digital printing industry.

Ready for the Future

With continuous investments in R&D and close cooperation with leading print vendors and customers, Tecnau looks forward to building on its positive performance achieved in 2022. The current product portfolio has proven to be ready to meet the customer needs of today, and with recently released and further upcoming enhancements, it will be ready to meet future press requirements for productivity, performance, and reliability. Tecnau’s products will continue to build on a strong foundation of labor-saving automation capabilities to help customers navigate today’s challenging labor market.

Production printers are looking more than ever at a mix of print solutions ranging from continuous feed inkjet, cut-sheet inkjet, and cut-sheet toner. With an extensive product range for all three print technologies, Tecnau says it is ready for the future growth of the digital print industry, with solutions incorporating enhanced specifications, reduced service requirements, and increased productivity for an optimized overall equipment efficiency (OEE).

Revolution 50 Roll-to-Roll system

The recently announced Roll-to-Roll system, built on the well-established and highly successful Roll 9 series, provides expanded specifications, including speeds up to 250m/min, web width up to 570mm, and higher web tensions ready for future printers and associated finishing requirements. The solution features significantly reduced power consumption compared to prior generations and competitive products that can lead to energy savings of 50% or more, the company said.

Tecnau’s Revolution 50 series

This cutting and stacking systems was introduced pre-pandemic. With over 50 installations worldwide since then, most of which are connected to the Tecnau Connect IoT platform providing instant and detailed performance data to Tecnau engineers, Revolution 50 has evolved to enhance its reliability, uptime, and flexibility over a broad media range, from 40gsm to 300gsm, coated (silk, matte, and gloss), uncoated and inkjet treated, all proven with lab validation and customer field experience in 24/7 environments.

The Roll 40 eliminates press downtime during roll changes while minimizing waste. Now, specifications have been enhanced to offer on-the-fly roll changes at higher speeds of up to 180m/min while supporting heavier paper weights up to 300gsm for graphic arts and commercial print applications, boosting the productivity gain possibilities to easily exceed 25%.

Sheet-fed press solutions

With more than 100 systems installed worldwide, Tecnau can offer inline or nearline solutions for sheetfed digital printers with a modular field upgradable concept that has proved to be successful among customers.  While the TC 1530 C dynamic perforating & scoring module has been popular for some time, the Stack 1010 system for automated cutting & stacking of multi-page impositions to final finished size has been enjoying significant market momentum recently, with an expectation that this will

continue to build in 2023, especially with new inline press possibilities expected. For B2+ color digital presses, Tecnau offers the Stack 1212 to reduce manual print handling in a single automated process. Tecnau is also working in partnership with other finishing vendors to further empower this product in 2023. The company has also recently introduced BookReady, a completely automated system for short-run and book-on-demand production inline to sheetfed digital printers with on-the-fly application change at speed and without any manual intervention.

Tecnau Connect

It has proved to be an advanced platform for the industrial internet of things (IIoT) with capabilities that include remote diagnostics and remote software updates, data collection, and parts lifetime notification possibilities – increased adoption is expected in automation-eager 2023. This system opens the door to a better and more streamlined production by monitoring and analyzing production and service data in real time. Tecnau Connect keeps track of productivity and status of the complete line down to single machines; it continuously monitors processes and performances, identifying patterns and trends that can be used to optimize processes and predict when maintenance is required or parts must be replaced, contributing to steady growth of the line OEE.

“At Tecnau, we believe our products represent our commitment to quality as well as our passion for innovation and automation,” said Stefano De Marco, chief executive officer at Tecnau. “We are humbled by the trust our customers have placed in us, and we are determined to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible to bring you products that inspire, delight, and make your digital print production better.”

Demonstrations of Tecnau products are available at the Tecnau Experience Center at Tecnau headquarters in Ivrea, Italy, or at the newly opened Tecnau Experience Center in the Tecnau US facility outside Boston.

2023 promises an interesting ride for print in India

Indian Printer and Publisher founded in 1979 is the oldest B2B trade publication in the multi-platform and multi-channel IPPGroup. While the print and packaging industries have been resilient in the past 33 months since the pandemic lockdown of 25 March 2020, the commercial printing and newspaper industries have yet to recover their pre-Covid trajectory.

The fragmented commercial printing industry faces substantial challenges as does the newspaper industry. While digital short-run printing and the signage industry seem to be recovering a bit faster, ultimately their growth will also be moderated by the progress of the overall economy. On the other hand book printing exports are doing well but they too face several supply-chain and logistics challenges.

The price of publication papers including newsprint has been high in the past year while availability is diminished by several mills shutting down their publication paper and newsprint machines in the past four years. Indian paper mills are also exporting many types of paper and have raised prices for Indian printers. To some extent, this has helped in the recovery of the digital printing industry with its on-demand short-run and low-wastage paradigm.

Ultimately digital print and other digital channels will help print grow in a country where we are still far behind in our paper and print consumption and where digital is a leapfrog technology that will only increase the demand for print in the foreseeable future. For instance, there is no alternative to a rise in textbook consumption but this segment will only reach normality in the next financial year beginning on 1 April 2023.

Thus while the new normal is a moving target and many commercial printers look to diversification, we believe that our target audiences may shift and change. Like them, we will also have to adapt with agility to keep up with their business and technical information needs.

Our 2023 media kit is ready, and it is the right time to take stock and reconnect with your potential markets and customers. Print is the glue for the growth of liberal education, new industry, and an emerging economy. We seek your participation in what promises to be an interesting ride.
