The government has highlighted a series of initiatives aimed at supporting the welfare, healthcare, and accreditation needs of journalists across the country. According to official data, financial assistance amounting to ₹19.41 crore has been disbursed to 456 journalists or their families between 2014-15 and 2025-26.

Under the Journalist Welfare Scheme (JWS), financial assistance is provided as one-time ex-gratia relief to journalists, media personnel, or their families facing extreme hardship due to death, permanent disability, serious illness, or accident-related hospitalization. The scheme covers both accredited and non-accredited journalists.

In addition, journalists accredited by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) are entitled to healthcare benefits under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), which includes treatment at government and empaneled priv Central Government Health Scheme ate hospitals at prescribed CGHS rates for themselves and their dependents.

The PIB, which grants accreditation to journalists in the National Capital Region, currently has 1,786 accredited journalists.

This information was shared by minister of state for information and broadcasting and parliamentary affairs, Dr. L. Murugan, in a written reply to a question in Parliament by Damodar Agrawal.
