
The department of printing technology of Arasan Ganesan Polytechnic College, Sivakasi, celebrated National Paper Day on 1 August 2025 under the initiative of the Student Services Cell as a part of the Canada India Institutional Co-operation Project. The program was organized with the objective of raising awareness about the importance of paper, promoting environmental sustainability, and encouraging recycling practices among students.
The welcome address was delivered by G Venkateswaran, a lecturer while M Nandakumar, principal, delivered the presidential address. He encouraged students to be environmentally responsible and congratulated the achievers. Nandakumar highlighted the importance of paper in daily life, its critical role in the printing and packaging fields, and about the paper-making process. He emphasized the significance of recycling waste paper and the production of handmade paper.Â
The principal appreciated the initiative of collecting waste paper from students of all departments and stressed the importance of environmental protection. He insisted to form a team of students to convert the handmade papers into value added products like envelope, mono cartons, attractive packaging designs, etc.,Â
As a step toward environmental protection, bins were distributed to all six departments – printing, ECE, EEE, mechanical, civil and computer – for collecting waste paper. The collected papers are then reused by the department of printing technology students for making handmade paper, reinforcing the value of recycling. Under the environmental cell, a team of volunteers were identified to motivate the students to use the separate paper collection bins. They are responsible to promote clean and green campus. They promote the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle the papers and not to burn or dump the paper waste.Â
Selvan M Krishnakumar, a student of III-year printing technology, delivered an informative and engaging talk on the history of paper, highlighting its evolution and significance in human civilization. Students who actively participated in the handmade paper-making process were appreciated along with student’s volunteers for executing collection of waste paper from various departments. As a token of appreciation the students were given motivational books.Â
The prize distribution was conducted by S Uthanumallayan, lecturer and the vote of thanks was proposed by M Pugazh, lecturer. This year, three students from the department of printing secured admission to Anna University, Chennai through the Lateral Entry Counseling Process.
Paramasivam, department in-charge of the printing technology department, encouraged the students to explore creative possibilities by producing various printed samples using handmade paper, thereby enhancing their practical skills and awareness of sustainable practices.
