Short-run postpress bottlenecks demand streamlined trim and binding efficiency

Noida Sector 60-headquartered Gopsons Printers is a veteran solution provider in security printing, examination stationery, book printing, redemption tickets, thermal paper-based customized point-of-sale (POS) systems, and ATM rolls. Nitin Goel, who runs the company alongside his brother Gaurav Goel, observes a fundamental shift in the Indian printing industry.

The shift, according to Nitin Goel, is that, “Large runs of over 10,000 are being replaced by 100-500 copy print jobs.Clients want course-specific, syllabus-specific books in smaller batches. Short-run is no longer a niche; it’s the new standard. And if you want to succeed in this space, you need machines that can scale down intelligently.”

In the press section, the company utilizes wide-format web-offset presses from Ronald and NBG and a narrow-web 6-color press, while its digital setup consists of a recently installed webfed inkjet Atexco VegaPress 660M digital monochrome press for printing of optical mark recognition (OMR) exam sheets. In addition, it runs a Fujifilm color production press for printing book covers and other short-run requirements.

In its new short-run workflow, Gopsons identified trimming as a significant bottleneck.“Earlier, we were using guillotines to cut answer books and short-run titles. It was slow, labor-intensive, and inconsistent,” Goel explained. “We needed something smarter, more streamlined. As demand shifts towards high-quality, short-run educational and institutional books, the need for efficient and precise post-press solutions becomes paramount.”

In addition to increasing its digital printing capacity, the company enhanced its post-press segment with Bindwel’s Trimit 30C, a semi-automated three-knife trimmer suited for short-run and medium-volume trimming needs. The equipment was installed with support from Suresh Nair, CTO and director at Bindwel Technologies, Bengaluru.

Goel first connected with Nair back in the 1990s during the installation of India’s first Kolbus binding line. Their paths have converged over the years, focusing on refining adhesive applications, troubleshooting binding challenges, and enhancing overall post-press output. “When we decided to expand into short-run inkjet digital printing, my first call was to Suresh Nair,” he says.

For Goel, the decision to choose Bindwel extended beyond technical specifications. “I have known the company since my earliest days in printing. Their machines are workhorses—and being made in India, the service support is far more accessible and responsive.” The three-knife configuration ensures precise and repeatable book dimensions, which is critical not only for professional presentation, but also from a sustainability standpoint. Gopsons further enhanced its short-run line by adding a six-clamp Bindwel perfect binder for quicker turnarounds.

Speaking of Bindwel’s after-sales support, Goel says, “Their engineers are quick, knowledgeable, and hands-on. Any issue, big or small, they respond the same day. This level of responsiveness is vital for institutional contracts with strict production timelines.”
