The 26th Orientation and Wisdom lamp lighting ceremony program of Media Technology Department was held on 18 and 19 July 2018, at Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal. The program was attended by 72 students and their parents, which was hosted on campus by the department.

Addressing the growing demand for print and electronic media along with an aim to foster dynamic and transformative students in the media industry, the department was instituted in 1992.

Print media focuses on conventional and modern printing technologies like 3D printing, smart packaging, printed electronics and related fields, whereas electronic media emphasizes on multimedia, sound engineering, videography, digital photography as well as film production.

The Wisdom Lamp was lit by T Gautham S Pai, managing director, Manipal Technologies Ltd., Manipal. While congratulating all first year students for getting into media technology, he insisted the budding engineers to focus on the technological transitions taking place both in print and electronic media like printed electronics, augmented reality, smart packaging, VFX, etc. He also suggested that the engineers must be able to provide solution-based business to the customers.

Dr. Gicy Kovoor, associate director (Academics), MIT in her message gave an introduction of the university and spoke in depth about prioritizing academic performance and the importance of tracking the Academic Calendar 2018-19.

In his talk, he briefed on telecasting network and signal processing, newsroom technologies, studio set-up as well as sound engineering. He gave an overview on the positive impact of electronic media on the lifestyle of the younger generation today.

Afterwards, they were accompanied by teachers of the department to experience the shop floor of Unit 5 (Commercial Print Division of MTL), one of world’s top class modern print factories.

The program closed with a note of thanks by Nithesh Kumar, assistant professor, to the management of MIT, MTL and all the participating students.
