The Bengaluru-based New India Foundation (NIF) has announced round three of its translation fellowships, aimed at bringing knowledge texts from Indian languages to English. Applications opened on 1 August 2025 and will close on 31 December 2025.
In pursuit of fulfilling the NIF’s objective to foster scholarship around Independent India and to provide a wider audience for Indian-language texts, these Fellowships will be awarded from across 10 languages for the translation of non-fiction texts published from 1850 onward.
The selected languages are Assamese, Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Odia, Tamil and Urdu. A grant Rs 6 lakh will be given to fellow students.
The New India Foundation’s focus on translating historical texts from Indian languages into English hopes to foster comparative literature about different states and streams of progress. This venture aims to create an expansive cultural reach for works which have thus far been confined to those who understand the original language of their composition.
The Fellowship has no constraints regarding the genre or style of the original text, the nationality of the translator, or the ideology of the material. Every three rounds of the NIF Translation Fellowships, languages will alternate to ensure that support is given to a pan-Indian representation of linguistic diversity, the foundation says in its website.
“Languages are repositories of regional cultures, histories and identities, and the NIF Translation Fellowships aim to make these more accessible to newer audiences,” says Niraja Gopal Jayal, trustee, New India Foundation.
