Pune-based Kadam Digital Transprints has always believed that the key to success lies in continuously reinventing themselves with time. Recently, the company installed a high-productive Digibook 450 model to bind short to medium runs of perfect bound books at the unit. Initiated as a prepress bureau, today Kadam Digital is a full-fledged print service provider. Sanjay and Kunal Kadam, directors at Kadam Digital, strongly believe that efficient and good quality finishing are just as important as printing for photobooks.

The duo says, “The DigiBook 450 is a high productivity model, ideal for digital printers who require short to medium runs of PUR perfect bound books. DigiBook’s main advantage is its closed nozzle system, which replaces the traditional open tank system. This system is less expensive, easier to operate and hardly requires any manual intervention. In Digibook, the PUR glue is applied to the book spine and on the sides by independent glue slots. The application of glue on the sides ensures that the book remains intact with the binding throughout its shelf life. The amount of PUR glue is determined by the height of the applicator, and the pressure applied giving complete control and allowing any book to be bound with maximum ease.”

In addition to the automatic cover feeder, the DigiBook 450 is equipped with an automatic book delivery and stacking section to maintain output speeds and reduce handling of the bound books. DigiBook 450 delivers around 450 books per hour, though Kadam Digital produces books at the maximum speed of 350 per hour. PUR is the strongest, most flexible binding adhesive available and offers several additional advantages over other binding adhesives. When inks, coatings or digital print toners are present in the spine area, these can compromise the strength of typical hotmelt perfect binding.

“Smart RGB, which is a valuable tool, we are able to smoothen out the images to represent a more continuous tone, enhancing the overall quality of the piece. It allows us to keep the PDF file in RGB and get a better quality image by just having the Smart RGB turned on.”

Morgana’s expertise for a long time and were delighted to know that PUR binding forms a strong bond with coated and laminated paper stocks too. We have been using Morgana’s AutoCreaser Pro 50 and have been extremely satisfied with Morgana’s performance. The Maximum productivity within 12 hours of shift is around 27,000 sheets. DigiBook 450 also ensures fast production of urgent jobs. Our business focus is always on best quality and speed of service, so it made sense for us to go for the top of the range,” they state.

In addition to the above, Kadam Digital has also installed a Hohner sewing machine and retrofitted the Kodak Nexpress SE 3000 with infeed delivery to input 14 x 26” sheet size. Kunal says, “Earlier, the size was 14” x 20”; however, the extended size allows to print with the bleed to do many odd jobs like coffee-table books and center-stitching books. Kadam Digital keenly studies the demands of the market and every year we keep on adding something in world class postpress machines. In digital, everyone tries to sell loose prints while we deliver a complete product. With Smart RGB, which is a valuable tool, we are able to smoothen out the images to represent a more continuous tone, enhancing the overall quality of the piece. It allows us to keep the PDF file in RGB and get a better quality image by just having the Smart RGB turned on.”

Making investments in the right solutions at the right time, Kadam Digital further plans to strengthen its focus on print demand products and soon will expand its services to print-on-demand books. As on date, Kadam Digital produces 95% of jobs in commercial and rest of photo albums.
