Kolkata-based Pal Binding Works, a post-press solutions provider since 1968, has installed a Blue Chip single-clamp perfect binder from Bindwel. Under the promoter Jayanto Pal, the company has carved out a niche as a fast-turnaround government vendor, known for taking on complex, time-sensitive binding commissions and working under strict deadlines.
Relying on aging machinery had led to severe operational bottlenecks. Pal Binding Works faced intense market pressure as customers increasingly demanded flawless, perfect-bound books and note pads. Production quality was declining, delivery timelines were frequently missed, and customer complaints became a regular hurdle. Worse still, the business began losing clients who migrated their demands to better-equipped trade binderies.
To reclaim its competitive edge, Pal Binding Works turned to technology, upgrading its shop floor in March 2026 with the installation of a Bindwel Blue Chip single-clamp perfect binder.
The Bindwel Blue Chip is specifically engineered for digital print environments and short-run commercial operations where versatility and rapid job changeovers are essential. For a compact plant like Pal Binding Works—which serves roughly 40 clients and sees seasonal volume spikes varying between 5,000 and 30,000 books a month—the new technology provided immediate relief.
According to Pal, the single-clamp machine expands daily capacity with a mechanical speed of up to 550 books per hour. It features an easily adjustable book clamp capable of securing substantial book blocks, allowing the facility to effortlessly bind spines ranging from 3 mm to 80 mm in thickness.
For spine preparation, it features a milling station equipped with a high-speed cutter and dedicated notching teeth that expose maximum paper fiber, while a powerful dust extraction system maintains a clean workspace.
Pal Binding Works pairs this precision three-roller spine gluing and separate side-gluing system with Henkel Technomelt Cool AS320—a high-performance, low-temperature hotmelt adhesive that manages consistent structural integrity and edge-to-edge binding strength.
The technology shift yielded an immediate operational turnaround. Pal notes that the business successfully won back the legacy clients they had previously lost to outdated machinery. Across the entire production workflow, speed and consistency have improved, waste has been reduced, and quality-related customer complaints have been reduced significantly.
The true test of the new setup arrived with an international commission to bind the Bhutan Government Report Card. The complex job featured a heavy 300 gsm cover wrapped around 80 gsm inner text pages, interspersed with varied sections of heavy 170 to 200 gsm art paper.
Managing varying paper weights and coated stocks usually presents severe risks of page pulling, but the Blue Chip handled the mixed-media publication flawlessly under a strict deadline.
Furthermore, the machine has allowed the team to successfully tackle 1,500- to 1,700-page-thick directories. The workflow involves back-cutting, thread-sewing the oversized signatures, and utilizing the Blue Chip’s adjustable nipping station to apply precise, uniform pressure for a perfectly clean, square finish.
“We selected Bindwel over other alternatives in the market due to their highly responsive service support and the ready availability of technical engineers,” Pal said. “The machine quality combined with their prompt after-sales care has completely transformed our workflow.”
As digitization continues to shift government workflows and reshape traditional book demand across West Bengal, Pal Binding Works stands securely protected against market volatility—relying on a potent mix of decades-long grit and modern, precise binding automation.
