Beyond glass towers — How print businesses drive growth

While Noida Expressway’s gleaming glass towers often steal the spotlight, a different market quietly buzzes in the narrow lanes of Sector 22. Once a quiet residential area, Noida Sector 22, specifically the pocket near Chaura Village, has slowly transformed into a high-density business hub, where an ecosystem of digital services, educational services, book shops, PG accommodation, banks, and small businesses is flourishing.

Following up on a previous report on the nearby Sector 24 ESIC Hospital market on the opposite side, this time we took a walk along the commercial stretch along the road facing Sector 12, Noida. Commonly referred to as Barah-Bais (12-22), the sector houses quite a few businesses dependent on print for both commercial, business, and marketing demands.

Walking along, we could see POS marketing, such as the distribution of pamphlets and brochures. Bhagwati Printers, which we had written about, has expanded—adding a medical store, apart from the already existing school uniform business. Surely, signifying that a single printing shop isn’t enough to sustain.

Walking through Pandit Market and Gaur Complex areas on a lazy Tuesday afternoon, the haphazard jungle of signage was quite apparent, with storefronts covered in flex banners, glowing LED boards, and hand-painted signs.

Shops such as Flex-hi-Flex dominate the streetscape, offering everything from instant 10-minute rubber stamps to large-scale vinyl printing offers, including flex banners, GSB boards, vinyl, LED boards, ACP boards, sun boards, roll-up standies, letter boards, etc.

The growth isn’t limited to just ink on paper. A detailed look at the market reveals a deeply integrated service model. The printing businesses have branched out into affiliated sectors, creating a resilient local economy.

For IT and hardware support, businesses such as Print Pals, Snap IT Solutions, and Ideal IT Solutions provide the backbone, offering cartridge refilling and printer repairs. Epson and Canon multifunction printers (MFPs) can be seen at most of these shops.

For education and skill development, directly above these shops, coaching institutes such as Topper’s Academy and Vimarsh Learning prepare students for competitive exams (SSC, banking, CTET). The narrow lanes of Chaura village house schools, stationery and book shops, whose printing and affiliated demands are met by the interconnected ecosystem. Students, from schools and coaching institutes, are the primary consumers of the photocopies and print-outs.

The surrounding businesses utilize signboards on a larger scale, along with printed commodities such as visiting cards, letterheads, pamphlets, calendars, brochures, and other forms of signage. Facilities such as photo studios are available for both albums and walk-in photos, with in-house binding available to a majority of the print service providers (PSPs).

The printers informed us that demand for passport-size pictures for admit cards of competitive exams and school ID cards has grown as this is the season for new admissions and entrance tests.

Despite the growth of paperless offices, Noida’s Sector 22 proves that physical documentation remains a formidable industry in India. Shops prominently advertise eMail print-outs and WhatsApp printing, acting as a digital bridge for residents and students who may have the files on their phones but need a physical copy for official government submissions or academic requirements.

The presence of financial institutions such as the Central Bank of India, Canara Bank, and Citizen Co-operative Bank within the same complexes fuels the need for instant documentation, whether it be KYC photocopies or loan application prints.

The market’s evolution from simple stationery shops to high-tech digital flex and graphic design centers (like those seen at professional multimedia institutes) shows a community that has adapted well to the digital age.

Located further from Chaura Lane are several eateries, which have had to reprint their menus amid the LPG crisis in India. Demand for menu prints has risen lately, including carry-away menus and pamphlets for distribution to customers who opt for home delivery.

For the MSMEs (micro, small, and medium enterprises) in Noida’s surrounding industrial sectors, the stamp shops provide essential bill books, challan books, and letterheads.

As Noida continues to expand, Sector 22 stands as a vibrant example where the smell of toner and the hum of printers signal a thriving, self-sustaining neighborhood economy.
