Senior journalist, author, and editor of The Telegraph, Sankarshan Thakur, passed away on Monday, 8 September 2025, at 63. He died in a Gurugram hospital after surgery.

Sankarshan Thakur began his career in 1984 with the Sunday magazine and later worked for The Indian Express and Tehelka before joining The Telegraph. He was known for his incisive political commentary and impactful ground reports, having covered significant events like the Kargil War and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

A keen observer of Indian politics, particularly that of his home state of Bihar, his writings included  – Subaltern Saheb: Bihar and the Making of Laloo Yadav; Single Man: The Life and Times of Nitish Kumar of Bihar; and The Brothers Bihari.

Sankarshan Thakur received the Prem Bhatia Award for Excellence in Political Journalism in 2001 and the Appan Menon Fellowship in 2003.

Tributes poured in from across the political and media spectrum.

Born in Patna in 1962, Sankarshan Thakur was the son of senior journalist Janardhan Thakur. Educated at St Xavier’s in Patna and Delhi before completing his political science degree at Hindu College, Delhi University, he chose journalism.
