Provin Technos, a Delhi-headquartered distributor of a range of printing presses across technologies and other equipment, has announced its partnership with book sewing and finishing pioneer Smyth s.r.l for the Indian market, adding a versatile, technically superior product to its portfolio. An agreement to this effect was reached during the recently concluded drupa 2024, the company said.
Smyth is the original inventor of the book sewing method known as ‘Smyth Sewing’ worldwide. Smyth was founded by inventor David McConnell Smyth, who was granted his first book sewing machine patent in 1879, championing the shift from labour-intensive hand binding to industrial scale production. For more than 100 years, Smyth has been developing and manufacturing book sewing machines, gathering machines, sewing lines, casemakers and now finishing solutions for short runs, book on demand and digital printing.
Today, Smyth is an Italian-owned company with two manufacturing facilities in Northen Italy. The Smyth headquarters, covering 6,000 square meters on a 10,000 square meter area, is located 100 km from Milan. The second facility, situated in Turin, is responsible for manufacturing all the mechanical components. From the design and planning stage to the manufacturing of each component, as well as assembly, testing, software development, sales and customer care, all activities and operations are carried out in-house to ensure high quality standards and expertise.
As we wrote before drupa24, Smyth offers a wide range of solutions that can fit the customer’s unique production needs and budgets from simplified hand-fed and semi-automatic book sewing machines to fully automated solutions, including entry-level, special-purpose and oversized book sewing machines. Unique technical features, top quality materials and patented devices make Smyth machines robust, reliable, and durable, providing high quality compact sewn books.
Smyth also offers reconditioned machines that do not compromise on quality. The machines are meticulously stripped down, inspected, and components replaced, following quality control procedures during the refurbishment process. Overhauled machines are supplied with 12 months warranty, which offer reliable performances comparable to brand-new ones at almost half price.
Smyth provides free remote technical support for all its automatic solutions to aid in the trouble-free running of its machines in the field with guaranteed spare parts and the availability of over 25,000-part numbers in stock. Smyth machines built since 1967 are still in operation, and are being provided technical support and spare parts for them worldwide, the company said.
Smyth recently entered two significant partnerships. The first one is with Canon to deliver the new industry in-line integration, empowering streamlined finishing hand-in-hand from printing through to book sewing and a second partnership with Italy based Tecnau, where Tecnau’s unwinder and guillotine cutter are combined with Smyth folding and sewing systems. This collaboration aims to bring cost-effective solutions for producing sewn book blocks from printed reels.
Provin’s Vinay Kaushal and Pradeep Nandagopal said they look forward to serve Indian printing market with a technically superior product that will boost quality and productivity for the end users.
Director Vinay Kaushal told Indian Printer & Publisher about the collaboration with Smyth, “We have a focus on giving high-quality products to the Indian printing industry for the enhancement of productivity and profitability. The collaboration with Smyth is in a similar direction. Provin will supply Smyth’s products in India.”
