The Media Foundation has awarded the Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Woman Media Person for 2024 jointly to independent journalist Greeshma Kuthar and Ritika Chopra of The Indian Express.

Ritika Chopra, bureau chief and education editor, The Indian Express, was awarded for her work on the rewriting of history in NCERT textbooks, and her reportage on the Election Commission after which the chief election commissioner was reinstated. 

Greeshma Kuthar, an independent journalist, won the award for coverage of the ethnic violence in Manipur.

The award is named after freedom fighter and community reformer Chameli Devi Jain. who was imprisoned during India’s Independence movement. It is presented annually to those practising impactful journalism in fields such as social development, politics, gender justice, human rights, health, conflict and consumer values.

The award presentation took place on 15 March 2024 at the India International Centre, which was followed by the BG Verghese Memorial Lecture delivered by TN Ninan, editor and author. The theme was ‘Work and Wages: Old Challenges in the Age of Automation and AI’. 

Ninan said around 15% of the global workforce could be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI).

Paying homage to Verghese, his former colleague and friend, Nina recounted the struggle Verghese led under the Indira Gandhi government for editorial independence to finally getting fired on the steps leading to the Hindustan Times office, the paper he edited, The Print reported.
