The pulp and paper industry is one of the largest industries in the world. As per forecasts, it is expected to remain stable, with profits to expand throughout 2019. The world production of paper and paperboard is forecasted to reach 490 million tons by 2020. Cardboard and packaging paper products will have continued global demand.

The packaging market is growing all over the world, along with tissue papers, and pulp for hygiene products. Currently, the demand for packaging products is increasing. As more people around the globe turn to online shopping or eCommerce, the demand for cardboard and other packing materials continues to grow. Other factors driving the success of the pulp and paper industry are the demand for hygiene products like paper towels, toilet paper and disposable makeup wipes and increased economic participation of the global middle class.

Judging by the investments by paper manufacturers in modernization and expansion in the industry, India’s pulp and paper industry seem to be strong.

Paperex 2019

Paperex is a series of international exhibitions on the pulp and paper industry and is held every two years in New Delhi, India. It has established itself as the ‘Business festival of the paper industry’ for joint ventures, investments and technology transfer, promoting the overall growth of the paper industry.

Paperex 2019 will take place from 3 to 6 December 2019 at Pragati Maidan, Delhi. The event has already received an overwhelming response from the world and over 90% exhibition space has already been booked in just a few months of the announcement. The event is expected to have more than 700 exhibitors from 35 countries.

The event is supported by major trade associations of paper and allied industries and World Paper Forum. Trade visitors from more than 75 countries are expected. There will also be international group participation from China, Finland, France, Germany, Italy and Taiwan. A special invitation program, I-50, will take place at the event, which is exclusively hosted for leading paper manufacturers and traders from 50 countries. The event will have new launches by exhibitors.

A handmade paper pavilion, concurrent conference and international business networking program will also take place at Paperex 2019. A technical conference will be hosted by Indian Agro & Recycled Paper Mills Association. The leading exhibitors will offer the latest technology, machinery and raw material for paper and board manufacturing. The event will also show innovation in papers and paper products such as writing and printing paper, specialty paper newsprint, kraft paper and graphic paper.

The exhibitors will showcase machinery for paper mill plants and tissue converting. Latest equipment and accessories on show will include rolls, bearings, blade and knife, pumps valves and system; raw materials such as pulp, waste paper, specialty chemicals, mineral and pigments; and new technologies in automation, quality and process control, and surface coating. The visitors will also get a chance to connect with major industry players and paper industry associations.

2023 promises an interesting ride for print in India

Indian Printer and Publisher founded in 1979 is the oldest B2B trade publication in the multi-platform and multi-channel IPPGroup. While the print and packaging industries have been resilient in the past 33 months since the pandemic lockdown of 25 March 2020, the commercial printing and newspaper industries have yet to recover their pre-Covid trajectory.

The fragmented commercial printing industry faces substantial challenges as does the newspaper industry. While digital short-run printing and the signage industry seem to be recovering a bit faster, ultimately their growth will also be moderated by the progress of the overall economy. On the other hand book printing exports are doing well but they too face several supply-chain and logistics challenges.

The price of publication papers including newsprint has been high in the past year while availability is diminished by several mills shutting down their publication paper and newsprint machines in the past four years. Indian paper mills are also exporting many types of paper and have raised prices for Indian printers. To some extent, this has helped in the recovery of the digital printing industry with its on-demand short-run and low-wastage paradigm.

Ultimately digital print and other digital channels will help print grow in a country where we are still far behind in our paper and print consumption and where digital is a leapfrog technology that will only increase the demand for print in the foreseeable future. For instance, there is no alternative to a rise in textbook consumption but this segment will only reach normality in the next financial year beginning on 1 April 2023.

Thus while the new normal is a moving target and many commercial printers look to diversification, we believe that our target audiences may shift and change. Like them, we will also have to adapt with agility to keep up with their business and technical information needs.
