India’s competition watchdog, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), has raided six paper mills in a suspected antitrust investigation linked to supplies for a government schools’ body, news agency Reuters reported, citing sources with direct knowledge of the matter. The investigation is probing alleged price collusion in supplying paper to the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

The CCI conducted surprise searches starting Tuesday across Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and the National Capital Region, according to the report.

Companies searched include Satia Industries, Silverton Pulp, and Chadha Papers, while another source told the news agency that Shreyans Industries was also under scrutiny. Satia Industries’ finance chief, Rachit Nagpal, confirmed the raid and said the firm had cooperated. Silverton Pulp declined to comment, and the other companies did not immediately respond, Reuters reported.

The inquiry stems from a complaint filed last year by the NCERT, which procures paper for textbooks and teaching materials for schools.

Reuters noted that India produces roughly 5% of the world’s paper and generates about US $11 billion in annual turnover. The industry has been facing heightened regulatory attention. The raids typically involve seizing documents and electronic data and questioning company officials, sources told the agency.
