Indore-based Spot Grafiks, a leading printing company in the city with three decades of experience, recently upgraded its digital printing capabilities by installing the Canon ImagePRESS V700. In an interview with Indian Printer and Publisher, Sanjeev Vyas and his son Arpit Vyas discuss their motivations for choosing Canon’s digital press and the growing demand for digital printing alongside traditional offset.
Transitioning from traditional to digital: Sanjeev Vyas’ perspective
With 30 years in commercial printing, Sanjeev Vyas has established Spot Grafiks as a prominent offset printing business, operating five Komori offset presses of varying sizes. In addition to offset presses, Spot Grafiks has a full range of post-production machinery, including bookbinding, stitching, and lamination equipment. However, with an increasing demand for short-run, fast-turnaround printing, Sanjeev saw the need to incorporate digital technology to complement his traditional setup. Grafiks has been into digital printing for almost a decade.
“After Covid, there’s been a noticeable shift in the industry, with digital and conventional technologies complementing each other more than ever,” he explains. “Offset printing requires plate-making and multiple processes, which can take days. Digital offers delivery within hours.”
Spot Grafiks evaluated several digital press options before making the final decision. Ultimately, the Canon ImagePRESS V700 stood out due to its vibrant color quality, precise registration, and affordability, Sanjeev said.
The next generation’s vision: Arpit Vyas on the future of digital printing
Arpit Vyas, Sanjeev’s son and head of the digital division at Spot Grafiks, shares his insights into the digital printing market and how the Canon ImagePRESS V700 aligns with their goals. Reflecting on the decision to choose Canon, Arpit notes, “We needed a machine with higher quality, less downtime, and robust performance. Canon fit these criteria well.”
Spot Grafiks’ Canon ImagePRESS V700, installed in mid-September, has been operating at a steady capacity. Arpit said that their standard sheet sizes are 12×18 and 13×19 inches, and they print approximately 20,000-25,000 sheets monthly, primarily for in-house, corporate clients. He stated that Spot Grafiks focuses on quality and premium pricing rather than retail jobs, catering mainly to larger corporate clients within Madhya Pradesh.
Looking to the future, Arpit believes digital printing will continue to grow, with each type of printing serving different purposes. “Offset is still superior for large runs, but digital is ideal for short runs and quick turnarounds. In commercial printing, having both offset and digital capabilities provides flexibility and efficiency, especially for those looking to offer comprehensive in-house services.”
The Canon ImagePRESS V700 allows Spot Grafiks to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving market. For Arpit, having digital capabilities in-house is essential, and he advises other commercial printers to consider adopting digital technology to meet clients’ varying needs.
