With the new clustering architecture of the new version 5 of its digital asset management solution Elvis DAM, WoodWing enables content creators to efficiently manage up to one billion assets

At its Xperience conference, WoodWing Software announced version 5 of its digital asset management solution Elvis DAM. With a server architecture that has been entirely rewritten, the new version enables the high- performance management of up to one billion assets. In addition, Elvis DAM 5 will offer new web client features, a further extended API, as well as deeper integration with popular desktop applications. The new version will become available later this year.

In these days of multi-channel publishing and content marketing, publishers, agencies and marketing departments all face a major challenge. To attract and grow their audiences, an increasing number of media files such as images, videos, audio, and more is being used for the various channels, resulting in dramatically increasing file stocks.

The new architecture enables the high-performance management of up to one billion assets. “While Elvis always relied on powerful search engine technology instead of a database approach and already serves customers with up to 20 million assets, trends show that we need to be ready for the next step,” said Bastiaan Born, product manager DAM Software at WoodWing Software. According to Born, another performance aspect is the increasing number of users of DAM systems, including internal teams, as well as external freelancers and partners such as resellers.

Infinitely scalable, enterprise-level DAM

With the new clustering architecture of Elvis DAM 5, WoodWing helps content creators overcome this limitation. “Watching the evolution in the digital asset management arena, we realized that we need to scale horizontally — distributing the main server over multiple machines,” Born added. “This new cluster setup distributes the server load over multiple servers so you can add more server nodes, be it processing nodes, search index nodes or storage engines.

The search index of the Elvis DAM repository is split into ‘shards’ and spread over multiple machines. The new ElasticSearch feature allows combined parallel search scans, resulting in significantly decreased search times. “Elvis DAM has always been famous for its very high performance,” Born said. “By distributing DAM jobs to multiple servers, each with multiple processors, Elvis DAM is now infinitely scalable and able to grow with any requirement.” In addition, the new architecture of Elvis DAM 5 increases redundancy and high availability of the DAM environment — both of which are important aspects of an enterprise-savvy DAM system.

Elvis DAM 5 will also feature an enhanced web client, an improved API and a revamped integration with desktop applications. A recent study conducted by WoodWing on the status and the expectations in digital asset management revealed that these aspects are clearly in the focus of DAM users and administrators. According to the study, 92% of the participating DAM users voted for a web-based user interface, and 20% to 36% planned to integrate their DAM with their web CMS and various applications such as editorial workflow, customer relation management, marketing resource management and other systems.

Elvis DAM is a future-proof DAM platform

“The efficient and secure management of digital files, valuable assets for any company, has long become a business-critical application,” said Roel-Jan Mouw, CEO WoodWing Software. “With the new version of Elvis DAM, we provide our customers with a future-proof platform for their digital asset management requirements, supporting any on premise and any private cloud implementation.

Whatever the future will bring, Elvis DAM is prepared for it.”
