‘320 years, 12 presidents, 10 emperors, 2 republics, 1 newspaper’, reads the final front page of Wiener Zeitung, the world’s oldest newspaper.
After 320 years of publications, the Vienna-based Wiener Zeitung ended its daily print edition on 30 June 2023. First published under the name Wiennerisches Diarium, it was launched on 8 August 1703.
The 320 year old newspaper was published for 1,16,840 days.
As reported in Forbes, the newspaper saw a sharp decline in its revenue after a new Austrian law dropped a fee for publishing legal announcements, which represented an estimated 18 million euros in income for the publisher. Shutting down the daily newspaper led to the cutting down of 63 positions, including 35 from its editorial staff.
Although the print edition is closed, it will continue to operate online and plans a monthly print edition as well in the future. The final daily print edition features interviews with Arnold Schwarzenegger and former Austrian chancellors Franz Vranitzky and Wolfgang Schussel.
The newspaper was published for 1,16,840 days. According to Der Spiegel, the tag of the world’s oldest daily newspaper now belongs to Hildesheimer Allgemeine Zeitung, Hildesheim, Germany publication, which was first published on 24 June 1705.
