According to Michel Hunkeler, this year’s Innovationdays event signaled a new level of openness and cooperation with leading manufacturers such as Horizon and Muller Martini. The implication is that this new level of technical exchange and agreement has meant better integration of the paper finishing modules with the binding and end-process modules of these manufacturers. Smart binding systems, designed to handle consecutive productive production of single books with varying format and pagination, is one area where this integration is paying off even in India.

Horizon showed a fairly elaborate smart binding system similar to what they showed at drupa 2016, including the BQ 480 perfect binder which is now shipping. A newer version of the BQ480 4-clamp perfect binder with more powerful stepping motors that improve its milling, sizing, pressing and creasing capabilities was shown at Hunkeler Innovationdays

Horizon’s Indian representative Om Prakash HR explained that while the leading Indian digital book printers cannot always go in for the entire automated system at one time, they are keen to have smart binding systems for the dynamic production of single copies and short runs. In one case, a leading book printer who saw a similar solution at Horizon’s stand at drupa has been able to implement the solution in the past year, by only buying some of the essential modules and leaving out a couple to save costs.
