OpenAI has announced the launch of the OpenAI Academy for News Organizations, a new initiative designed to help journalists, editors, and publishers effectively integrate artificial intelligence into their newsroom operations. The project is being developed in collaboration with the American Journalism Project and The Lenfest Institute for Journalism.

Unveiled during the AI and Journalism Summit, co-hosted by OpenAI, the Brown Institute for Media Innovation, and Hearst, the Academy offers practical, hands-on resources for media professionals navigating the growing influence of AI in news production.

According to OpenAI, the Academy provides on-demand training such as AI Essentials for Journalists, practical use cases for investigative research, multilingual reporting, data analysis, and newsroom efficiency, as well as open-source projects that news organizations can adapt for their specific needs. It also includes guidance on responsible AI usage, including developing governance frameworks and internal policies.

The initiative builds on OpenAI’s long-standing partnerships with journalism organizations and media groups worldwide. Previous collaborations with the American Journalism Project and The Lenfest Institute have focused on helping local newsrooms responsibly adopt AI for investigative work, improve business operations, and enhance sustainability.

“AI is already transforming how newsrooms work,” OpenAI stated in a blog post. “The Academy is designed to provide immediate value while addressing real concerns around trust, accuracy, and job impact.”

OpenAI’s ongoing partnerships with publishers—including News Corp, Axios, The Financial Times, Condé Nast, and Hearst as well as collaborations with groups like AJP, The Lenfest Institute, the World Association of News Publishers (Wan-Ifra), and the International News Media Association (INMA) —reach audiences in over 20 languages globally. The company says it plans to expand the Academy in 2026 with new courses, case studies, and live programming to help journalists and news organizations innovate responsibly.
