In an interim relief, the Madras High Court on 6 March 2025 told the union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to unblock the Ananda Vikatan website after the Chennai Tamil language publication temporarily removed the offending cartoon that shows Indian prime minister Narendra Modi shackled in chains during a meeting with US president Donald Trump.

It asked the Ministry to unblock the Ananda Vikatan website after the Chennai Tamil language publication temporarily removed the offending cartoon.

Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy passed the order on a writ filed by Ananda Vikatan Productions Private Limited and Ananda Vikatan Publishers Private Limited. They challenged the I&B Ministry’s 25 February 2025 proceedings and a direction to the Ministry to restore public access to the website, www.vikatan.com.

Arguing for Ananda Vikatan, senior counsel Vijay Narayan said the caricature did not affect the integrity and sovereignty of India and was freedom of expression under section 69 A of the Information Technology Act. Additional solicitor general A R L Sunderesan countered that the caricature offended section 69 A of the IT Act.

The case will be heard again on 21 March.
