The ANI page on Wikipedia says, “ANI has been accused of having served as a propaganda tool for the incumbent central government, distributing materials from a vast network of fake news websites, and misreporting events on multiple occasions.”

News agency ANI has filed a defamation suit in the Delhi High Court against online encyclopedia Wikipedia over what it said was “false and defamatory content with malicious intent.” The court issued summons to Wikipedia.

According to media reports, ANI said Wikipedia was not allowing its page to be edited. “My page…can only be edited through their representatives,” the news agency’s lawyer told the court. 

Wikipedia has mentioned ANI’s lawsuit on ANI’s page. “On 9 July 2024, ANI Media Private Limited filed a lawsuit against Wikipedia in the Delhi High Court, claiming that the news agency was defamed in a description on the website. ANI is also seeking Rs. 2 crores (239,554.80 US Dollars) in damages from Wikipedia,” the latest update said.

The ANI page has two sections subtitled Propaganda, Misinformation, and Employee Management where the news agency is critically analyzed citing reports from The Caravan, The Ken, Poynter, etc. 

Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia edited by volunteers. It is owned by the United States-based non-profit Wikimedia Foundation.

Media reports said ANI wants the defamatory information removed, in addition to Rs 2 crore in damages from Wikipedia. “It’s a pure case of defamation,” Justice Navin Chawla verbally remarked, Scroll reported.
