HP Scitex FB500 printer is designed for the production of indoor and outdoor graphics on rigid substrates up to 48 x 64 inches and 2.5 inches thick

Haresh Mehta at Jayna Packaging is well known for his work in the design of corrugated sign, display and packaged products. The material in their Kurla office in Mumbai—right from the work desk to the benches, a rocking chair and unique packaging designs—is completely made out of cardboard. And now adding to this vast repertoire is the ‘Loo Box’.

Speaking about the innovation, Mehta said, “We don’t live in a developed nation where after every half a kilometer we come across a dwelling having sanitary facilities. Such products are needed for the elderly, travelers and female companions. The uniqueness of this product is its lightweight, which can take a load of around 120 kilos.” Apart from the Loo Box, his latest attempt has been to get a wheelchair access ramp made of cardboard for patients at Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital in Mumbai.

Having keen interest in origami, Mehta wants to manufacture paperboard products used from ‘Cradle to Coffin.’ He shared, “Through Origami, we transform a flat sheet of paper into a finished product via folding and sculpting techniques. The kraft paper is sourced according to one’s requirements and that helps one control the strength of the material.

I never manufactured or used more than 5-ply for any load. If a design has to carry a weight of 150 kg, I need to know what kind of permutations and combinations to use on paper.”

Mehta confirms the installation of HP Scitex FB500—a digital press to supplement the sign and display printing capabilities and to provide high-quality graphics on rigid materials. “The press can print white ink. White is a color that offers various effects and heightens the impact of promotion in packaging, when printed on kraft board. The HP Scitex FB500 printer is a versatile device designed for the production of indoor and outdoor graphics on virtually any rigid substrate up to 48 x 64 inches (122 x 160 cm) and 2.5 inches (64 mm) thick,” he said.

Seamless texture and pattern design is a valuable asset for graphic designers. Mehta showed us a huge, fully functional bar along with a digital press at the unit. It was manufactured by Jayna and the high-quality graphic printing of wood textures and patterns was done by the HP FB Scitex 500 press. Producing products made out of wood are a combination of art, design and paper science. “To produce such products involves extensive research. Our designs combine functionality, comfort and beauty,” he informed.
