Rs 5.6 crore penalty on publications, 88K registrations cancelled via press portal

More than ₹5,63,83,000 in penalties has been collected through the Press Sewa Portal,

All press and periodicals registration services are now online under the Press and Registration of Periodicals (PRP) Act, 2023, with over 1.5 lakh legacy records digitized and 780 district authorities onboarded, minister of state for information and broadcasting L Murugan stated in the Lok Sabha. Since March 1, 2024, a total of 11,081 applications have been processed.

The government has imposed more than ₹ 5 crore (₹5,63,83,000) in penalties through the Portal, while 88,315 periodical registrations have been cancelled across India. The highest cancellations have been reported in Maharashtra (12,403), Uttar Pradesh (11,987) and Delhi (11,920), he stated.

All physical records of newspaper registrations (more than 1.5 lakh) created under the now-repealed Press and Registration of Books (PRB) Act, 1867, have been digitized and made part of the Press Sewa Portal.

Services such as registration of new periodicals, revision of registration of existing periodicals, ownership transfer of periodicals, filing of annual statements, payment of penalty online, circulation verification of periodicals, etc., are being processed through the Portal.

The list of registered newspapers/periodicals is available on PRGI’s website (https://prgi.gov.in/) under ‘Registered Titles’ tab under the ‘Our Services’ head.
