AI is likely to have a major impact on how news media works across the world

In a previous report quoting the Reuters industry survey, we wrote how the creator economy, along with generative artificial intelligence (AI), is likely to disrupt the news industry and intensify pressure on established news organizations in 2026.

In another report for Reuters, Marina Adami, Felix Simon, and Eduardo Suáres summarize forecasts by 17 experts from around the world’s leading newsrooms, including India’s Scroll, on how AI reshapes the news in 2026.

News through AI As audiences increasingly use generative AI-powered chatbots and tools when searching for information, traditional ways of accessing the news will give way to news stories being discovered and accessed via AI.

Demand for verification Credibility will differentiate news outlets in a world where information is easy to access, but trust is low. Audiences will want to see evidence and sources to back up what they are told online, and news publishers have an opportunity to meet this need.

Automation and agents AI will become embedded in newsrooms’ CMS and workflows. Publishing of some information will be automated and carried out by agents, and stories will be automatically updated. The much-discussed ‘human in the loop’ might be quietly retired. This finding, obviously, raised eyebrows.

Upskilling and new AI infrastructures Newsrooms, especially small ones, will invest in the infrastructure and training necessary to make the most of what AI has to offer.

AI to empower data journalists As AI improves and becomes more accessible, it could enable newsrooms to gather and sort through an unprecedented number of documents and help data journalists.
