Mondi recently announced the construction of a new biomass power plant at its integrated pulp and paper mill in Ružomberok, Slovakia. The new power plant will replace the existing bark boiler and is scheduled for completion in 2027.

This investment will increase the mill’s energy self-sufficiency from 75% to 90%, providing a more sustainable and reliable energy supply for both the mill and the local community. Mondi SCP is currently supplying district heating in Ružomberok, and once the new power plant is operational, it will be able to further supply energy without relying on natural gas.

The investment will also meet the strictest emission standards and help to further improve air quality, with expected environmental benefits including a 50% reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and up to 83% less particulate matter emissions as compared to the old boiler.

“By increasing energy self-sufficiency, the project provides long-term operational resilience and supply reliability, strengthening Mondi’s ability to deliver consistent, high-quality products for its customers while also enhancing cost competitiveness,” said Joachim Grunewald, managing director of Mondi SC.

The new power plant will utilize residual materials from the pulp and paper production process to generate energy, reducing landfill waste and emissions while increasing the use of renewable energy sources. All biomass is sourced from certified forests that adhere to responsible forest management practices, thereby contributing to long-term environmental sustainability. The improved environmental performance of the new power plant will make an important contribution to the Group’s Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030) sustainability commitments.

Mondi SCP is investing 120 million Euros, net of subsidies from the European Union’s Modernisation Fund which supports modernization of energy systems and improvement in energy efficiency.
