The McGraw Hill warehouse in Noida is divided into three distinctive zones. The loose locations are areas where in- dividual books are stored in the racks on a random basis but all are traceable using the location software.
The carton lo- cations are where individual full or partially filled cartons are located, measured and traceable. The bulk locations are ar- eas where multiple cartons are stacked up in pallets. Each zone is divided into bays, racks and bins and a book in any lo- cation automatically gets defined in the software. When an ISBN order is entered the software locates the books, cartons
or pallets depending on the quantity needed and gives the picking location and sequence of the picking for completing the orders. Replenishing of stock for unfinished orders takes place during the first hour of each day to ensure clearing of the backlog before new orders are taken up.
Since all such software relies on ISBN numbers it is possible to access the software for stocks of third-party publishers without increas ing costs. Software enabled warehouses reduce time of despatch by a tenth, say publishers who have scaled up their business and decreased operating costs
