The international event ‘Designing for Children 2019’ with special focus on ‘Play and Learn’ is scheduled to be held in Mumbai, India from 6 to 8 December 2019. The event will be hosted by the IDC School of Design (IDC), at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Mumbai with support from India Design Association (InDeAs) and DesignIndia.

The international event is aimed at deliberations and discussions concerning design issues related to children. It is expected to throw light on the role of designing for children as related to design of objects, media and environment with focus on ‘play and learn’.

The events are centered around the interests of students, educationists, practicing designers and children related interest groups. They have been designed to be lively, interactive and thought provoking, and will provide great opportunity to interact with thought leaders and listen to visions by researchers.

The major events during the week include Design Workshop on 6 December 2019, Design Education Meet on 6 December 2019, International Design Conference on 7-8 December 2019, and Exhibition and Demo of Projects on ‘Design for Children’ on 6-8 December 2019.

The call for papers for the International Conference on Designing for Children is now open. The selection of paper abstract will be done through blind jury. The author/s of the selected papers will have to read out their pieces during the conference. The time duration for each of the paper presentations is 15 minutes plus 5 minutes of discussion followed by a Q&A session. All the selected papers will be published during the time of the conference. The papers will also be made available online after the conference along with the ISBN number.

The organizers have set the deadline for paper abstract submission with 500 words limit on 1 May 2019. The deadline for full paper submission has been set for 1 September 2019.

The call for posters for the International Conference on Designing for Children is open. The selection of poster abstract will also be done through blind jury. The selected posters will need to be displayed and explained by the author(s) during the conference.

The deadline for Poster Abstract Submission with 500 words has been set for 1 May 2019. The organizers will accept Poster Abstract on 1 June 2019. The deadline for Full Poster Submission (A1 size posters – 1 nos.) has been set as 1 September 2019.

The second and third day afternoon on 7 and 8 December 2019 sessions are dedicated to presentations through poster. Participants can submit a poster of dimension 2 ft width x 3 ft (A1 size) height in vertical format. The participants will be provided with 2 ft width x 3 ft height panels where their posters can be mounted.

The second and third day afternoon on 7 and 8 December 2019 sessions are dedicated to demonstration of projects. Organizers will provide the participants with a table/space of 2 ft width x 3 ft length where they can demonstrate their projects.

The deadline for Project Demo Abstract Submission with a limit of 500 words has been set as 1 August 2019. The deadline for acceptance of Project Demo Abstract is for 1 September 2019.

The organizers have invited interesting experimentation, different perspectives, innovative design applications, in-depth case studies, research outcomes and position papers centered on the theme of the conference on Designing for Children with focus on Play + Learn. The suggested main themes and sub-themes for submission of papers are products for children with focus on Play + Learn, issues involved with design of products for children, toys, games and puzzles for children, design with sustainability issues for children, and process, methods and theories on designing for children. School for children with focus on Play + Learn, design as a subject in school curriculum, design as a methodology for learning other subjects, alternative methods of learning systems for children, learning and play theories, learning through play activities, design of school textbooks and other learning materials.

Children’s environment with focus on Play + Learn, design of play environment for children, design of living environment for children, design of parks, schools, hospitals, playgrounds, etc. for children. Children and media with focus on Play + Learn, design of storytelling methods for children, TV and film programs for children, illustration, comics, animation for children, design of children’s publications, communication design for children, typeface and readability issues for children.

Interactive environments for children with focus on Play + Learn, design of interactive systems and technologies for children, social networks for children, design with new technologies for collaborative activities, usability issues and human factors as related to children, design of virtual environments for children.

Children with special needs with focus on Play + Learn, design for children with special needs.

Development issues of children with focus on Play + Learn, children’s behaviors, perception, and emotion, development of sensorial skills in children, issues connected with innovative and creative potentials in children.

The registration for the International Conference on Designing for Children will start from 1 June 2019 onwards. An early registration before 1 October 2019 includes an early rate.
