People’s Daily, the largest newspaper group in China, has completed a major press relocation of its Goss Universal 75 press to a new, state-of-the-art printing facility in Beijing. Goss was selected by People’s Daily as the original manufacturer of the Universal 75 press model to manage the entire project, which took twelve weeks to complete.

Goss engineers project managed and supervised the relocation of the 6-tower Universal 75 and worked together with People’s Daily employees and local teams to provide the most cost-effective solution for the company. Ian Buckley, general manager at Goss UK, comments, “Goss has a long relationship with People’s Daily. We listened to what they wanted and put together an economical solution using Goss’ knowledge and engineers to supervise the technical aspects of the move and ensure a smooth transition for the company.”

The People’s Daily is a leading newspaper in China and is published worldwide with a print circulation of three million. As well as Chinese, editions are published in English, Japanese, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Tibetan, Kazakh, Uyghur, Zhuang, Mongolian, and Korean.

The Universal 75 consists of six towers, two folders and six reel splicers and will continue to be used to produce high-quality newspaper products for the Chinese market. As well as the relocation, the Goss Universal press has been upgraded with a blanket wash system and Goss will provide control system integration.

Goss’ OEM expertise enables them to undertake complex reconfiguration and relocation projects, including additions to existing equipment with minimal disruption, which often make the most sense in the fast-changing market of print. Goss can also enhance and upgrade equipment at the same time, ensuring press or postpress equipment performs reliably and at highest possible quality.

Goss upgrades for T23 infeed and chill rolls for older presses
Goss has introduced an upgrade for the press tension control system on most of its heatset web offset presses. In addition to addressing the existing infeed and chill roll control module obsolescence issues, this Goss-designed solution will improve tension control and web transport, and result in much greater resolution and tighter calibrations.

In the upgrade process executed by Goss-trained technicians, the strain gauge is eliminated; the DC harmonic motor is replaced with AC; and, the drive control unit and control logic are replaced.

The upgrades are useful in obsolescence situations by improving press performance and production reliability. The new components match the original Goss design and performance specifications and bring new life and performance to older equipment. The upgrade applies to the following press models: M100, M1000A, M1000A2, M1000B, M1000BE, M100L, M110B, M120C, M130, M24D, M300M, M8 M850, M8L, M8S, M90, MERCUR, N400B, N9000, N9000D, N900III, N954, NCH4000, P100L, PRINTSTREAM, PS100, PS100S, V15, V25, and V30.
