Manroland’s digital finishing solutions for publishers
On 2 May 2017, manroland web systems hosted an event at Jade Garden, Worli to introduce its unique solutions in digital finishing for book and commercial printers.
Sudeep Bhattacharjee, managing director at Manroland India, kick-started the event on a positive note saying, “Manroland, as we know, is associated with heavy-duty machinery that we make mainly for the newspaper and commercial sectors but today, we are here to talk about digital and not many of us know much about the digital product of Manroland. We would speak of the finishing segment today while Kodak, who will talk about its print engine.”
Talking about the key features of digital, Rodd Harrison, sales and marketing director – enterprise, Inkjet Systems, Asia Pacific Region at Kodak (Singapore), gave a brief introduction on print-head systems, inkjet and workflow solutions. He said, “Mono presses are used extensively in book publishing. We have been in publishing books, commercial print, direct mail, newspapers and packaging space. And now we are moving to flexible packaging and printing on plastics at a very high speed and low running cost. We started writing in the first generation of writing system way back in 1960 and now are in the fourth generation of writing system—stream and next generation Ultrastream. The key things we deliver –are quality and productivity at low running costs. No digital quality is as cheap as offset and I feel both digital and offset will coexist for a very long time. Kodak presses offer the lowest running cost among all digital presses around the world.”
Alwin Stadler, vice president – digital solutions at manroland web systems, speaking about the digital finishing solutions, says, “Our target is to integrate printing systems, so that one can make use of the system’s complete resources. We expand printing systems with fully integrated finishing systems to create different kinds of products. Additionally, we have workflow platforms available. We make use of existing prepress equipment to create platforms which allow automated processing of the digital product from PDF file to ready-to-transport.”
Manroland’s FormerLine is a unique reel to book block solution for digital book production. It finishes the longitudinal glued books and flyers. For newspapers, FoldLine can finish A5 products up to 96 pages tabloid or 48 pages broadsheet at the speed of 300 meter per minute in continuous operation. The digital finishing equipment is available in different web widths of 20 inch, 30 inch and 42 inch to handle a variety of substrates ranging from 45-150 gsm paper. Manroland’s finishing solutions offer the flexibility of processing newspaper format in tabloid and broadsheet as well books and brochures with an integrated high-speed collator. Stadler informs, “We are working towards better technology and are following the demands of this changing industry. We intend to use these new developments to create new businesses and products. Meanwhile, we see a fascinating demand coming from the newspaper industry. Both the digital finishing equipment are available in different web width of 20-inch, 30-inch and 42-inch to handle variety of substrate ranging from 45-150 grammage paper.Further, our systems offer solutions like palletising for packing and delivery. For FoldLine, we also offer solutions like stitching, which extends great flexibility for all kinds of newspapers and magazines.”
