PM Digital upgrades to Scodix Ultra Pro
PM Digital Products is a relatively young but seasoned entrant in the world of digital publishing. Their interest in adoption of best-in-class technology is reflected in their eagerness in doing innovative jobs and moving to the next level swiftly.
We met P Chellappan, partner and chief technologist, PM Digital Products at his office in Peters Road, Chennai, to understand the company’s journey right from 2005 when they got into MGI, then in 2007 when they upgraded to an Indigo 3050 and later in 2012, when they adopted the Scodix S74 digital enhancement press as the first Asian customer.
According to Chellappan, making regular upgradations in technology has become integral for the survival of any business today. For instance, PM Digital recently upgraded from the earlier Scodix S74 to the Scodix Ultra Pro with Foil. The Ultra series is considered amongst the fastest, high-quality and most accurate digital enhancement presses for textured finishes. The press, capable of producing up to 1,250 B2+ size sheets per hour, can handle stock from 135 gsm to 675 gsm on thicknesses up to 700 microns.
Scodix incorporates the patented Rotate Scale Position (RSP) based on 4 CCD cameras to deliver pin-point accuracy. PolySense 500 polymer enables ultra-fine details and best possible gloss level for print. The additional Scodix Foil module digitally creates a brilliant foil effect with zero waste or mess.
According to Chellappan, “We want to make print more appealing and want our customers to feel the product rather than just see it. Our investment in the Scodix Ultra Pro will take printing to the next level of perfection. We aim to provide complete solutions to our customer base and all the processes are done in our printing facility at Chennai. With the latest Scodix Ultra Pro, we can easily produce short to medium runs profitably.”
In addition to the Scodix, PM Digital houses a number of small postpress equipment for finishing, cutting, creasing and binding. Chellappan says that the company is currently making more investments in postpress rather than the press. They have an HP Indigo 5600, which comes with white ink and invisible ink options. With white ink, the press can produce high-value, high-impact commercial applications of all kinds while its ElectroInk UV Red, or invisible ink, option creates print that is only visible under UV light. This provides customers with the option of adding anti-counterfeiting features to products such as ID cards, high-value coupons, tickets, etc.
Chellappan also takes prides in the company’s innovations using its in-house software customization and development capabilities. He says, “Whatever software requirements we have, it is all taken care of in-house – be it related to print control or variable data. We have a lot of flexibility in what we do with our software. We even prepare our die-lines using our own software.”
Established in 2005, PM Digital Products is a partnership company and digital wing of the six-decade-old Palaniappa Brothers, a leading book publisher and printer in Chennai. Specialists in variable data printing, they also print posters, brochures, sample books, labels and other short-run print work.
